Kids Drumming: Special Needs

by Steve Zangwill, December 7, 2014

Rhythm Exchange, a company that offers drumming lessons, hosts birthday parties and team-building workshops, is also open to people with various special needs. Founder Steven Zangwill says that “everyone becomes equal in drumming circles.”

In 2006, Zangwill was invited to the Summit School to work with special needs children and since then, he has offered drumming classes for children with autism spectrum disorders, Rett Syndrome, ADD as well as those with stress and anger issues.

Zangwill says he is inspired by the nonverbal communication that comes through when kids with special needs play the drums and he often sees ‘a light turn’ on when they are allowed to express themselves and make noise. Located at 2240 Pitt St. in St. Henri, Rhythm Exchange will design a flexible drumming program based on a participant’s needs.
