Building Community, Enjoying Physical Benefits & Having Fun

In a Drum Circle everyone is speaking, everyone is heard, and each person’s sound is an essential part of the whole. A Drum circle is an interactive and dynamic musical event that can offer various healing benefits on many levels.

Encouraging Self-Expression & Building Community
The joy of the drum circle is the participants expressing themselves! A Drum Circle provides an outlet for creative self-expression. This is especially true for those who are not comfortable or unable to express how themselves verbally. For them, group drumming is a valuable outlet. The effect of drumming is vibrant. Drumming seems to open parts of our personalities that are perhaps rarely seen or heard. We have observed in our many sessions that participants have more energy and enthusiasm after participating in the drum circle. Playing in the drum circle has the ability to bring people out of their shells. There is a sense of freedom in joining with the rhythms. For those with special needs drumming is a way to express oneself without the frustration of trying to communicate verbally. In general, drumming builds relationships between the people playing together, sharing the space.

Most people have not had the opportunity to play in a drum circle before, however, the good news is no experience is required to join in the fun! There are many ways to participate and be a voice in the circle. In doing so, participants are making music- rhythm, together and that is an enriching and energizing human experience, one that is shared.

Mental & Physical Benefits
It is really possible for almost anyone to participate, regardless of age, physical or cognitive impairments. We bring a wide variety of percussion instruments to our drum circle, with many instrument options for people with physical limitations.

Some of the benefits researchers are attributing to therapeutic drumming include;

•    produces feelings of well-being
•    increased focus
•    sharpened motor skills
•    increased range of motion
•    boosts the immune system
•    releases emotional trauma
•    pain reduction

Research suggests that drumming not only distracts participants from pain and sadness. It actually promotes the production of endorphins and other painkillers made by our own bodies, and therefore helps control pain.
